Report on the CUPE National Convention - October 2009
Union Members for Israel is pleased to report that at CUPE's National Convention in Montreal the Resolutions Committee did not bring forward the Israel-related resolutions (250-254) to the delegates for public debate or vote. The National leadership of CUPE is not interested in promoting the extreme and divisive anti-Israel propaganda that has been emanating from various quarters within the union, particularly the Ontario and BC Divisions.
Also significant was a debate on a proposed constitutional amendment (C24) requiring mandatory affiliation of all CUPE locals to their respective provincial divisions. The proposal was defeated, thanks in part to passionate speeches given by delegates from locals 79 and 265. Walk with Israel 2009
Union Members for Israel exceeded its fundraising goal in the Walk with Israel on Sunday, May 24th, raising over $1,000.
Funds raised will help enable United Jewish Appeal to support effective, life-changing educational and social supports for Bat Yam’s Ethiopian-Israeli community to integrate them into mainstream Israeli society. Funds will also continue to support successful social and educational initiatives in Eilat/Eilot, Toronto’s partner community - enhancing opportunities and transforming the region.
